Andreas Helwig (FIEAust, ExecEng, CPEng, APECEng, RPEQ) retired, but is an active volunteer research member and research mentor at the UniSQ Centre for Future Materials. 22 years as a specialist traction electro-mechanical engineer in Qld Rail, plus 17 years as an engineering consultant for applied research in life techno-economic and reliability engineering maintenance modelling. Industry applied R&D for long-life electrical machine insulation systems, traction drive systems, batteries, carbon and bearing technology for rail and mining motive vehicles. Then, 14 years as an academic at UnISQ, teaching at honours and master's level, including Engineering Practice Leader and then Post-graduate Engineering Program Director. Areas of research interests: Electrical machines, renewable energy generation/storage, NEM grid stability, circular economy techno-economic modelling, energy from waste, porous carbon electrodes and miscible alloy materials technology. Also have maintained a STEM education development interest, as per 22 years of volunteering in a lead educational role development as former CEO and still COO for Project Madagascar - a trilingual educational Aid and Development competency program (2 new schools constructed, a new curriculum in three languages from Kindy/Prep to Grade 12 in Antananarivo with 740 student places).
